Building Permit Status Reports

A Building Permit Status Report provides a summary of all Building Permits pertaining to one property.

Requesting Records

Any party is eligible to request a Building Permit Status Report. Requestors can use eApply to submit a request.

Record Format

A Building Permit Status Report contains:

  • Building Permit number and status;
  • date of application;
  • date of issuance;
  • scope of work (purpose);
  • last completed inspection, inspection status, and any noted deficiencies.

Reports do not include copies of permits, and no property ownership information is released in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act.

Single Detached Dwellings

A Building Permit Status Report for a Residential Single Detached Dwelling contains a summary of all permits related to the requested parcel, including those for subtrades, detached garages, decks, hot tubs, secondary/garden suites, basement developments, etc.

Commercial, Industrial, and Multi-family Structures

Some Commercial, Industrial, and Multi-family sites may contain multiple structures on one parcel. Each Building Permit Status Report is based on the address for one structure; separate applications are required if a site contains multiple individual buildings.

For multi-unit buildings or Commercial Retail Units, the requestor must specify if the desired report is for:

  • the base building;
  • one specific unit;
  • multiple units.

A more descriptive request makes it easier for City of Lethbridge staff to determine the scope of the desired report.

Preparation of Records and Fees

Building Permit Status Reports are processed in queue with other permit applications. It usually takes 2-3 business days to perform the file search and prepare a report.

The base application fee of $75 includes the first hour of file research. Properties with more extensive records may be subject to additional fee of $50 per hour or part thereof. Additional fee payments can be made online through the eCommerce portal and are due prior to the release of the report.

Requirements for permits and plans have evolved over time. As such, Building Inspections cannot guarantee the contents of a Building Permit Status Report. There is no refund if the files provided do not contain the desired information.
