Nomination Process
To become a candidate, individuals must follow and complete the Nomination Process, which is broken down into four steps. Click to learn more about each.
Step 2
Confirm eligibility to run
To be eligible, prospective candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years of age on Nomination Day (September 22, 2025)
- Be a resident of Lethbridge for the six consecutive months before Nomination Day (September 22, 2025)
- Be a Canadian citizen, and
- Not be disqualified under the Local Authorities Election Act (Sections 21-24) or Education Act (Sections 4(4) and 74)
Step 3
Submit a Notice of Intent
Residents who want to run for office to become Mayor, City Councillor, Lethbridge Public School Trustee or Separate School Trustee must submit a completed Notice of Intent (see form below) before they can collect campaign contributions and be added to the Notice of Intent Registry.
It must include the following information:
- First and last name
- Residential address, including postal code
- Contact information (email address, phone number or mailing address if different from above)
- Intended election jurisdiction (City of Lethbridge, Lethbridge School Division or Holy Spirit Catholic School Division)
- Address of place(s) where candidate records are maintained
- Name and address of financial institution(s) used for campaign contributions
- Name(s) of signing authorities for campaign account(s)

Step 4
File all Nomination Papers
All Nomination Papers (see forms below) must be fully completed before submission. Forms that are incomplete or contain errors will not be accepted.
Candidates must submit their Nomination Papers in person at City Hall with the Returning Officer. Appointments must be booked by emailing election@lethbridge.ca. Plan to schedule one hour for your appointment.
Nomination Paper (Form 4)
Each Office has a distinct Form 4 that must be used and each requires a different number of signatures from eligible voters:
- Mayor - 100 signatures needed
- City Councillor - 50 signatures needed
- Public School Trustee - 5 signatures needed
- Separate School Trustee - 5 signatures needed
Nomination Papers are available for public inspection at City Hall during regular business hours or by appointment with the Returning Officer or Delegate (Section 28(6)(6.1, 6.2) of the Local Authorities Election Act).
Candidate Financial Information (Form 5)
This form is required by provincial legislation.
Candidates must also inform the City of Lethbridge of any changes to the information provided in the Candidate Financial Information form within 48 hours.
