The Role of City Council

The role of City Council is to ensure that the City of Lethbridge provides the services and programs that the citizens of Lethbridge need and want in a cost effective manner. They represent individual citizens of Lethbridge as well as the city as a whole and gather information to balance the wants of the individual citizen with the needs of the entire community. They set the overall policy and direction for the City of Lethbridge which City Administration will implement and operationalize. 

Mayor and Council are responsible for:

• determining goals and priorities for the City
• developing and approving policies, bylaws and major projects
• setting the tax rate and approving the City's budget
• hiring the City Manager who oversees all City departments
• representing and advocating for the municipality on the provincial and national level

Correspondence regarding City policy and direction will be shared with all members of City Council. If a response is required to your inquiry it may be provided by a member of City Council, the Mayor and Council’s Executive Assistants or other members of City Administration.
