How to apply - Paramedic Firefighter

Each year we normally conduct two intakes for our recruit class (Spring and Fall). The recruitment process is highly competitive and comprehensive, and consists of multiple stages.

Follow these steps to receive notifications: 

  1. Explore Job Postings & Sign-up for Alerts
  2. Under the job category, select ‘Fire/EMS, Fire Prevention, Public Safety’ and search. 
  3. Select the ‘Set a Job Alert’ using the bell/save icon.
  4. Enter your email address and click submit.
  5. You will receive an email confirmation and future Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services job postings. 
     

To apply for a Paramedic Firefighter position at LFES, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Alberta College of Paramedics registration  
    • Applicants must be registered as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), with preference given to ACPs.
  2. Firefighter Applicant Physical Aptitude Evaluation Medical Clearance Form
  3. Firefighter Physical Aptitude Evaluation Certificate
  4. Drivers' License 
    • A minimum of a Province of Alberta Class 4 Drivers' License is required upon the start date. 
    • Candidates must obtain a Class 3 and Q endorsement for air brakes within the first year of employment (cost not reimbursed by the employer).  
  5. Drivers' Abstract 
    • Dated within 3 months of the closing date of the job posting.
  6. Enhanced Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check)
    • Dated within 3 months of the closing date of the job posting.
  7. Fully completed Paramedic Firefighter Application Checklist
  8. Submit your application 
    • Follow the instructions on the posting and submit a complete application online at Lethbridge.ca/careers

Please note that hiring for Paramedic Firefighters is prioritized based on the following qualifications (in order of importance):

  • Advanced Care Paramedic
  • Second-year Advanced Care Paramedic student
  • Fire Training Certification
  • Experience in an Advanced Life Support EMS system (excluding industrial experience)
  • Other education/volunteering experience 

Once the job posting closes, complete applications are reviewed based on listed qualifications. Selected candidates will be invited for physical testing. 

  • Fire aptitude tests (written)
  • Medical scenario
  • Multiple choice medical exam
  • Interview
  • Inwald Personality Inventory

After completing these stages, a shortlist of applicants will undergo a psychological assessment. Successful candidates will receive offers of employment. 

Successful applicants undergo 12 weeks of intensive training, covering:

  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 
  • NFPA 1072 Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations
  • Vehicle extrication
  • Road to Mental Readiness (R2MR)
  • IAFF Fire Ground Survival
  • PETZL PES Escape Device training
  • Blue Card Command for the Firefighter
  • Incident Action Plan Development (IAPD)

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) with Alberta College of Paramedics registration
