Bear spray and blue carts are a ‘grizzly’ mix

City staff at the Waste and Recycling Centre have seen an increase in hazardous materials received from residential blue carts in recent weeks.

Multiple cans of bear spray have been found by staff in the last week, with one can rupturing. This caused an evacuation of the recycling facility, with some staff feeling the effects of the spray.

As the camping and hiking season starts to end, residents are reminded to take care when cleaning up their gear for the season. Propane tanks, bear spray and batteries are all considered hazardous materials and don’t belong in your blue, green or black carts.

Hazardous materials can pose a serious risk to staff when disposed of incorrectly. Hazardous household waste should never be placed in your carts and needs to be disposed of properly at the Waste and Recycling Centre in the designated area.

Residents can contact 311 or use the Waste Wizard to learn about where to dispose of their waste. For more information on putting your waste in the right place visit curbside.lethbridge.ca
