Businesses, organizations & institutions reminded to submit waste reports by January 31

The City of Lethbridge is reminding businesses, organizations and institutions to submit their online annual waste reports by January 31. More than 200 businesses have already submitted their reports with the free and easy-to-use online system, which takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

Whether large, small, family-owned, part of a national corporation, for-profit, or a charitable organization, businesses and institutions all fall under the Mandatory Recycling and Mandatory Organics provisions within the City of Lethbridge’s Waste Bylaw 6146. Home-based businesses are excluded from the mandatory requirements of the bylaw as they follow the residential waste, organics and recycling requirements.

There are four easy steps to ensure businesses comply with the mandatory requirements of the bylaw:

1. Provide separate bins for recyclables and organics with signage
   • Maintain receptacles for recyclables and organics
   • Post clear signage on or above receptacles

2. Have recyclables and organics hauled away for processing

3. Train staff on which bin to put their waste in

   • Train employees on how to use the recycling and organics receptacles/storage areas
   • Re-train affected employees when substantive change in waste collection services happen

4. Submit annual waste report online before Jan. 31, 2024

   • Report compliance annually using the City of Lethbridge’s online system, Re-TRAC.

More than half of the waste received at the landfill comes from the business sector. The mandatory requirements outlined in the bylaw were developed to reduce business waste and align with the waste diversion target set by City Council of reducing business waste by 45 per cent by 2030.
