City Council approves Waste Management Master Plan

No time is going to ‘waste’ in the City’s efforts toward a more sustainable future.

Lethbridge City Council on Tuesday voted to approve the Waste Management Master Plan (WMMP) proposed by the City of Lethbridge’s Waste & Environment department.

“Environmental responsibility is one of Council’s six strategic priorities,” says Councillor Belinda Crowson, Chair of the Governance Standing Policy Committee (SPC). “This plan will provide the necessary framework to actively enhance and sustain the natural environment and build a more environmentally friendly future for our city.”

The report came to Council via October 24 Governance SPC

The City’s first waste master plan, originally called the Waste Diversion/Waste Prevention Plan, was created in 2008. Since then, it has helped guide the City in finding ways to reduce waste and increase landfill diversion.

“We are pleased to see Council’s continued commitment to environmental stewardship,” says Mandi Parker, General Manager of Waste & Environment. “The Waste Management Master Plan will help shape the future for waste management in Lethbridge.”

The engagement project for the Waste Management Master Plan kicked off in May 2020 and received over 1,800 responses from residents – a record-setting level of participation among engagement projects at the time.
