City partnerships celebrate girls and women in sports day

Female youth are invited to join off-duty female first responders tonight for an evening of free sports, activities and mentorship with Off the Record: StrongHER Together.

The event recognizes International Girls and Women in Sports Day, a global celebration of female athletes, role models and leaders who are breaking barriers in sports.

“This is a night for girls in our community to join some of our local female heroes and embrace their passion for sport,” says Constable Brooklyn Peterson. “StrongHER Together provides a safe and casual environment for girls to be themselves, support one another and have fun.”

The 90-minute session will be hosted at the Cor Van Raay YMCA from 6-7:30 p.m. and is free to attend for female youth ages 10-17. It aims to inspire young girls in Lethbridge to reclaim their place in sports, empower them to push past obstacles and unlock their full potential.

“This is a great opportunity for us to connect with girls and show them that women can be strong, independent and empowered through sport,” says Regimental Sergeant Major Mackenzie Morisseau. “Mentorships like this can help youth discover so much about themselves and help them grow.”

Off the Record is a partnership between the City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) that was developed in 2024 through the Building Safer Communities program. It was created to reduce barriers for youth accessing recreational opportunities and foster positive connections with law enforcement and first responders.

“Women who work in male-dominated fields like law enforcement may feel additional pressures to meet certain expectations in the workplace,” says Peterson. “This relates to the challenges that young girls face when pursuing athletic careers in a world where gender disparities persist, and StrongHER Together aims to break that barrier down.”

Attendees must bring a clean pair of indoor shoes. Water and snacks will be provided.

Registration is required and can be completed here until 3 p.m. today.
