City says bye-bye-bye to weekly green cart collection for the winter

As cooler weather sets in, the City of Lethbridge is reminding residents to reduce the rollout of their green cart to every other week until the spring.

Residents who have a green cart can expect to see it collected on a bi-weekly basis starting the week of November 4. The seasonal approach to collection accounts for variations in yard waste generation and addresses the “yuck” factor or odour experienced during the warmer months with household organics.

To stay on top of cart collection days, residents are encouraged to download the free Lethbridge Loop app, which provides a schedule for waste, recycling and organics pick-ups as well as alerts about snow route declarations, street sweeping and planned power outages – all directly to your smartphone.

Alternatively, residents can use the Waste Wizard to confirm their cart collection schedule or contact the friendly team at 311 from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Diversion data shows that over 11,500 tonnes of organic waste has been diverted from the landfill thanks to curbside customers since the inception of the green cart program in 2023. This averages out to approximately 345 kgs of organic material diverted per household.
