Council Highlights July 23, 2024
- From unanimous approval of the Consent Agenda, Lethbridge City Council voted support a bid for the 2026 Memorial Cup. This would include $1.25 million and a letter of support to the Sport Tourism Advisory Committee. The event would be held across a 10-day period in late May and early June 2026 at the Sportsplex. There is no bidding fee paid to the CHL, therefore if the bid is unsuccessful, there is no financial impact for the City. Read the full news release here
- From unanimous approval of the Consent Agenda, Council voted to support several Targeted Redevelopment Incentive Program (TRIP) applications. Sumus Property Group Ltd. is proposing to redevelop four vacant lots (524/528/532 and 537/539/543 13 Street South, 605 5 Street South/510 6 Avenue South and 202 5 Street South) into mixed-use sites, each anticipated to be four to six stories with 30-35 residential units. These approvals were solely for the TRIP funding. Each of these proposed projects will still need to go through the zoning process and Public Hearings before being approved to build. - After a divided motion, Council voted unanimously to adopt the updated Municipal Housing Strategy (MHS), in principle, as a guiding document. Council voted 5-4 in favour to direct Administration to return to the Annual Operating Budget Review at the November Economic and Finance Standing Policy Committee meeting with a proposed implementation plan and associated implementation funding allocation request
- Council voted 7-2 against an Official Business Motion from Councillor Schmidt-Rempel, which had an ask to engage an independent third-party consultant to provide recommendations with implementation options and costing on a review of the workload, expectations and resourcing for elected officials
- In a motion arising from Councillor Carlson, Council voted unanimously for the Governance Standing Policy Committee to have a discussion on the workload, expectations and resources for Elected Officials at the meeting on October 24, 2024, in coordination with the discussions on Council Orientations
- Following a Public Hearing, Council voted to carry second and third readings to Bylaw 6442 – Land Use Bylaw Amendment re:1163 Abitibi Rd W
- Following a Public Hearing, Council voted to carry second and third readings to Bylaw 6443 - Land Use Bylaw Amendment re: 925 15 Street South
- Following a Public Hearing, Council voted to carry second and third readings to Bylaw 6444 - Land Use Bylaw Amendment - 3420 12 Ave N
- Following a Public Hearing, Council voted to carry second and third readings to Bylaw 6446 – Statutory Plan Bylaw 5115 Amendment re: 921 and 925 19 Street South
- Council voted to carry second and third readings of Bylaw 6450 - Amendment to Bylaw 6250 - Procedure Bylaw
- Council voted to carry first, second and third readings of Bylaw 6453 - A Bylaw to Amend Bylaw 6431
- As part of the Consent Agenda approval, the following items were also carried: Recommendation of Assets & Infrastructure Standing Policy Committee - The Piers Outline Plan-Land Use Concept Amendment; Recommendation of Assets & Infrastructure Standing Policy Committee - University of Lethbridge South Campus Development; Recommendation of Assets & Infrastructure Standing Policy Committee -Proposed Pocket Park Donation: Chinese National League Society to City of Lethbridge; Recommendation of Economic & Finance Standing Policy Committee - Fee-for-Service Cost Benefit Analysis; Recommendation of Economic & Finance Standing Policy Committee - Project D-28 SAAG Facility Enhancements 2022-2031 CIP Amendment; and Recommendation of Economic & Finance Standing Policy Committee - Customer Parking at City Hall
- Bylaw 6409 - Land Use Bylaw Amendment re: 3690 36 Street North carried first reading. A Public Hearing will take place on September 17, 2024, at 3 p.m.
