Council Highlights June 25, 2024
- Lethbridge City Council voted unanimously to approve a capital investment of $1.2 million for Lethbridge School Division to upsize the gymnasium at the soon-to-be modernized Galbraith School. Due to the timing required for the Division to leverage Province of Alberta funding, City Council approved funding of $1.2 million in 2026 from the $10 million that was held for future projects from prior capital budget deliberations. - Council unanimously approved a resolution to direct Administration to reinvest annual surpluses within the Transit and Access-a-Ride approved 2023-2026 Operating Budget back into operations to enhance Transit and Access-a-Ride services in Lethbridge. With the highest ridership numbers in the history of the service and a $1.3 million improvement in financial performance from 2022-2023, the department is building momentum for continued growth and enhancements. - Council voted unanimously in favour of an OBM from Councillor Jeff Carlson on Succession Planning for Council to direct Administration to consider creation of a ‘succession planning policy’ for municipal elected officials. Administration will provide a follow-up report to Governance SPC in July

- Two Bylaws passed second and third readings: Recommendation of Governance Standing Policy Committee - Bylaw 6448 - A Bylaw to Amend Bylaw 6099 (City Manager Bylaw) and Recommendation of Governance Standing Policy Committee - Bylaw 6431 - A Bylaw of the City of Lethbridge to Amend the City Manager Bylaw (Bylaw 6099) and City Clerk Bylaw (Bylaw 4783)
- As part of the Consent Agenda approval, the following items were carried: Recommendation of Economic and Finance Standing Policy Committee - Procurement Summary Reporting Harmonization and Recommendation of Economic and Finance Standing Policy Committee - Economic Development Lethbridge Annual Report
- Also, five bylaws carried first reading (Bylaw 6442 – Land Use Bylaw Amendment re:1163 Abitibi Rd. W; Bylaw 6443 - Land Use Bylaw Amendment re: 925 15 Street South; Bylaw 6444 – Land Use Bylaw Amendment re: 3420 12 Avenue North; Bylaw 6446 – Statutory Plan Bylaw 5115 Amendment re: 921 and 925 19 Street South; and Bylaw 6447 - Land Use Bylaw Amendment re: 921 and 925 19 Street South). They will all be part of a Public Hearing on July 23 at 3 p.m.
