Crosswalk Safety
The City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge School Divisions are working together to improve transportation safety in school areas. Visibility of crosswalks near schools is important to ensure the safety of children walking to and from school or during drop-off and pick-up periods. When drivers park in or near a crosswalk, it restricts the visibility of children crossing for all other drivers, significantly increasing the risk of a collision and or serious injury.
Drivers are not to park or stop their vehicle within 5 metres of a crosswalk for ANY amount of time, especially during the drop-off or pick-up periods, as this is when pedestrian traffic is at its highest.
Drivers should be aware the following rules of the road apply to crosswalks and intersections as described in section 1330 of the City of Lethbridge Traffic Bylaw (Bylaw 5834). The penalty for violation is up to FIVE HUNDRED ($500.00) DOLLARS.
A driver shall not stop or park their vehicle:
· On a Crosswalk or on any part of a Crosswalk;
· at an intersection nearer than FIVE (5) metres to the projection of the corner property line immediately ahead or immediately to the rear, except when his Vehicle is parked in a space where a Parking Meter or other Traffic Control Device indicates Parking is permitted;
· within FIVE (5) metres on the approach to a stop sign or yield sign;
· within FIVE (5) metres of any fire hydrant, or when the hydrant is not located at the Curb, within FIVE (5) metres of the point on the Curb nearest the hydrant;
· within ONE AND A HALF (1.5) metres of an access to a garage, private road or driveway, or a Vehicle crossway over a Sidewalk;
· within FIVE (5) metres of the near side of a marked Crosswalk.
By adhering to the rules of the road outlined above, you are helping to create a safer community for your school and all nearby residents.
