Electric Utility crews upgrading electricity meters

The City of Lethbridge Electric Utility Department is upgrading residential and commercial electricity meters that are due for testing. This is in alignment with regulations set by Measurement Canada to ensure electricity is being measured accurately.

Electricity meters in Lethbridge have a 10-year lifespan. After that period, the City is required by Measurement Canada to send a sample of expired meters to an approved agency for testing.

What do I need to do if I receive a letter from the City saying my meter will be upgraded?

Properties that receive a mailed letter are the only ones being upgraded. A City of Lethbridge technician will come to the property to perform the installation.

If you prefer to schedule an appointment for your installation, please follow the instructions outlined in the letter.

Why aren’t all expired meters being upgraded?

Measurement Canada randomly selects a percentage of expired meters throughout the city for accuracy testing. If the tested meters pass inspection, the lifespan of the remaining expired meters will be extended eight years. If they fail inspection, additional expired meters may require replacement.
