Excessive contamination challenging wastewater treatment plant

The City of Lethbridge’s wastewater treatment plant is experiencing a significant level of contamination, believed to be vegetable oil. This contamination is overloading the facility’s processing capabilities, putting extra strain on the system that treats water before it returns to the Oldman River.

As a precautionary measure, containment booms were installed on the river near the wastewater treatment plant to minimize any risk of spillover. No oil has entered the river and staff will be monitoring into the evening, with equipment on hand, should any cleanup be required.

As per regulations, the City of Lethbridge has notified Alberta Environment and is working collaboratively to address the issue. An investigation into the source of the contamination is underway.
