Fairmont Pond Bank Rehabilitation
Work is underway to revive banks along the east lobe of Fairmont Pond.
The area has been hit by several floods over the years. The ensuing erosion has worn away significant amounts of the banks on the north and south sides of the pond. The recovery work includes:
- Stripping existing grass and topsoil at the pond edge.
- Adding clay, rock and topsoil to reinforce the pond edge.
- Introducing a six-metre ‘no-mow’ buffer all the way around the pond edge. (Crews currently mow right to the edge of the pond.)
- Planting native pond and wetland plant species within the no-mow zone and into the water.
- Adding native shrubs, that thrive in wet conditions, along the edge to enhance visual interest and biodiversity in the park.
The east entrances and pathways into Fairmont Park are closed during construction. The west half of the park and pathways will remain open.
Weather permitting, the project is expected to be complete by July 31.
