Food banks win after Mayor's Community Hockey Challenge
In a game that saw some slick skating and a lot of laughs, the City team won on the scoreboard but food banks have ultimately won out.
With approximately 240 pounds of food donations and gifts received plus almost $2,000.00 in financial contributions, the estimated total raised to date from the event is approximately $3,000.00. Donations can still be made to the challenge by visiting this website.
"This is such a fun event to organize and play in and I want to thank everyone who was so generous with their time and contributions," says Mayor, Blaine Hyggen. "Times are tight for many this time of year and being able to give back to our community really helps to lift the holiday spirit."
Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge Executive Director, Danielle McIntyre says the Lethbridge community continues to give generously to those in need.
"It's inspiring to see our leadership encouraging the Spirit of Giving!" says McIntyre. "We're grateful to see so many community members coming out in support of our local food banks at a critical time when so many citizens are having to turn to us for help. It is never too late to give, and we encourage participation in community collections, online giving and upcoming events that will ensure that everyone has a chance to enjoy a Merry Christmas. Most importantly, we hope the generosity will continue so there is enough food on the table for everyone year round."
The game featured a team of Community Partners made up from many local institutions including Lethbridge College, the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge & District Exhibition and Lethbridge Hurricanes. The City team saw volunteers from a range of departments including Lethbridge Police Service, Fire & EMS, City Clerks, Land Development and City Council.
Mayor Hyggen says plans to hold further community challenge events are already being discussed for 2023 and looks forward to finding new opportunities to give back to the community.
