The City of Lethbridge Parks and Cemeteries department is unleashing the annual Dog Waste Awareness Month. This May, we’re encouraging responsible pet ownership and cleaner public spaces.

“The campaign plays a vital role in reminding residents about the importance of picking up after their pets,” says Ashley Walker, Parks Community Coordinator. “Some pet owners don’t realize that pet waste can spread disease and damage vegetation. Less dog waste means cleaner parks and a better experience for everyone.”

Throughout the month, the Doggy Doo Doo Crew will be out in full force. Each Thursday in May, volunteers will clean up a different dog park in Lethbridge. In place of each waste pile, a white flag will be placed – a powerful visual to highlight just how common the issue is. The flags will stay up for two weeks to raise awareness and encourage better habits.

"Accumulation of dog waste in both parks and on private property is a very common complaint that our Animal Bylaw Officers receive year-round,” says Skylar Plourde, Director of Services and Enforcement with Community Animal Services. “Dog owners must pick up and dispose of dog waste right away when in public spaces. At home, they must also make sure waste doesn’t build up and become a nuisance or health risk to others. Fines under the bylaw for these offences start at $100."

The campaign runs in May, but cleaning up after your dog is a year-round responsibility. It helps protect our parks, waterways and the environment.
