Local businesses invited to talk Scaling Water Rates
Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) sector members using City of Lethbridge water are invited to discuss proposed Scaling Water Rates. The City is hosting two open houses, in the Culver Meeting Room at City Hall, on Monday, March 3 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
The sessions will include:
- Information on the proposed tiers.
- Sample water bills comparing current vs proposed pricing.
- Feedback on how the new costs will impact individual businesses.
- Ideas for commercial water conservation actions.
The proposed rates aim to minimize impact on the ICI sector, with 93 per cent of users unaffected. Even with these changes, Lethbridge's rates will also remain among the lowest in Alberta and Canada. Scaling Water Rates is a key strategy in achieving a 20 per cent reduction in local ICI water usage by 2030. It also supports the sustainability of the infrastructure needed to treat and deliver water.
“We encourage ICI sector members to join us for these open house sessions to learn more about the proposed water rate changes and provide feedback,” says Environmental Manager Mark Svenson. “This is an opportunity to discuss how the new pricing may impact your business and explore ways to conserve water.”
On April 23, 2024, City Council approved the Water Conservation Plan and Strategy (WCPAS). Administration was also directed to engage the ICI sector regarding the proposed changes to Scaling Water Rates. Feedback captured during the engagement will be presented to Council as part of an updated presentation in April.
