Mighty-Lethbridge embraces a new initiative.

In the early months of 2024, Lethbridgians got to work describing heartwarming stories about helpful neighbours who go the extra mile. A new initiative, Mighty Neighbours, was launched in February and continued through March and April. Residents were encouraged to nominate their neighbours who perform acts of kindness and make life a little easier. Nominated residents could then have the opportunity to be recognized and celebrated for their efforts in helping to make their neighbourhoods a brighter place to live.

The first season of Mighty Neighbours was a trial that focused on the mighty tasks of shoveling snow, keeping an eye on the gutters lining their street, or making sure the doggie doo clean-up is always done (even in the snow). Learn all about our inspiring heroes: Snow Shoveling Steve, Gavin the Gutter Buddy, and Poop-Scoopin' Penny. The test run of the initiative provided a chance to gauge the level of participation and adapt the approach as needed.

“We saw a great deal of enthusiasm for the initiative and received more than 70 nominations,” says Heather Gowland, Transportation Community Coordinator. “As we develop the Mighty Neighbour initiative, we want to make sure it's simple enough to that people remember to nominate their neighbours and provides some cup-filling moments that really mean something to those who participate in it.”

One nomination was randomly selected monthly throughout the winter season. The three nominators selected were provided with a gift package to share with the person they nominated; a certificate of appreciation, Mighty Neighbour stickers and a jar of Blue Sky honey. Nominators were also given a small jar of honey for their household, for helping to foster a community of appreciation.

The City of Lethbridge will be sharing Mighty Neighbour stories this month in an effort to bring a smile to residents’ faces. The community can read these by following the City of Lethbridge social media accounts, Instagram and Facebook.

With all the community spirit demonstrated this past winter, we look forward to rolling out a summer season edition of Mighty Neighbours in July.
