No fooling, it’s phase two of the Water Meter Upgrade Program

The multi-year effort to replace 10,000 manually read water meters resumes this week. The neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood project continues in the west Lethbridge community of Heritage Heights on Wednesday, April 2.

Phase one of the Water Meter Upgrade Program replaced more than 2,200 old meters from April to August 2024. Phase two aims to upgrade another 2,000 meters.

“We appreciate residents’ cooperation during phase one,” says Leanne Lammertsen, Water and Wastewater Operations Manager. “In those five months, we successfully upgraded 99 per cent of the targeted meters. With the insights gained from phase one, we’re confident we’ll achieve the same results in a shorter time frame this year.”

Property owners requiring a new meter are being contacted via email and Canada Post. Digital messaging is also being delivered through the Lethbridge Loop app. The app is available for free download on Apple and Android devices. The free 30-minute appointment can be booked by contacting Lethbridge 311 Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The new meters offer several efficiency upgrades, including:

  • Simpler data collection processes.
  • No need for staff to access properties for meter readings.
  • Fewer missed reads.
  • More accurate and consistent billing.

The City plans to make money from the old meters again. In phase one, more than $7,000 was generated by selling them on GovDeals, a site that helps municipalities get the best value for surplus items.
