Provincial changes to default electricity rate coming into effect January 1

The Government of Alberta is implementing changes to the Regulated Rate Option (RRO). As of January 1, 2025, the RRO will be known as the Rate of Last Resort.

Along with the new name, the Rate of Last Resort will be a fixed rate set every two years that can only increase or decrease by no more than 10 per cent between terms. According to the province, these changes are meant to encourage consumers to seek out a competitive retailer rather than use their default provider.

I’m on the RRO. What does this mean for me and what should I do?

Residents who currently rely on electricity provided by the City of Lethbridge will not notice any difference in the service they receive. After January 1, those residents will see a memo on their utility bills to consider seeking alternatives.
