Pruning with a purpose: Lethbridge trees are getting their winter makeover
Regular winter pruning of street trees is underway.
Winter is the best time for pruning most trees, when they are dormant and there is a reduced risk of spreading disease. Elm trees have a specific pruning window from October 1 to March 31. All elm wood is disposed of properly to prevent the spread of elm disease.
City crews begin this year’s effort with Brandon Elms along Red Crow Boulevard West and Poplars in Columbia Bay Park. Other areas set for pruning include:
- Corvette Crescent South
- Areas around Henderson Lake
- The middle median of Mayor Magrath Drive South
- Downtown
More areas may be added if time permits.
Rossco’s Tree Service will prune additional trees in south Lethbridge. The contractor will prune approximately 900 trees between 6 Avenue South and 9 Avenue South, running from 4 Street South to 13 Street South. All pruning is scheduled to be complete by March 31.
Motorists are asked to keep an eye out for pruning crews in the coming months. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we maintain the health and beauty of our urban forest!
