Reminder to check your smoke alarms this weekend

As clocks “fall back” this weekend, Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services encourages residents to take the opportunity to check and maintain their smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms should be inspected twice a year and tested monthly to ensure they are working in case of an emergency.

Take these steps to ensure your home is protected:

  1. Check your smoke alarms’ expiration date. If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, it should be replaced.
  2. Change your smoke alarm batteries.
  1. Test your smoke alarms to confirm they are working.

A working smoke alarm is the best way to protect your family in the event of a fire.

Take a few minutes to ensure everyone in your home recognizes the sound of the smoke alarm and knows what to do in case of a fire. This is also a good time to review your fire escape plan, locate fire extinguishers and ensure everyone knows how to use them.
