Residents can now view traffic cameras for Whoop-Up Drive

Lethbridge motorists looking to access more live-time information on the city’s busiest roadway have a new tool to plan or adjust their route.

Four new traffic monitoring cameras have recently been installed to look at Whoop-Up Drive, both westbound and eastbound, as well as at Whoop-Up Drive exit ramps at University Drive and Scenic Drive. The 24/7 cameras, which can be viewed here, take still images in two-minute increments with each photo stored for 20 minutes.

The cameras are used by Infrastructure Services staff for traffic engineering purposes, such as assessing the effectiveness of traffic systems and efficiency measures like traffic signal timing plans. While these traffic monitoring cameras allow the public to access real-time traffic information through the City’s website, individual vehicles or people are not monitored. The cameras are also configured to prevent the collection of any personally identifiable information. Footage is only used for immediate traffic monitoring and management purposes.

The cameras also tie into the Whoop-Up Drive Emergency Traffic Protocol, which was updated last year and can be viewed here

A reminder that bridge rehabilitation work is underway on westbound Whoop-Up Drive and is estimated to last until Labour Day weekend in September, weather permitting.

Residents are encouraged to check the WebMAP and allow for additional time to get to their destination to help reduce road construction frustration. The map provides residents with accurate and up-to-date information on road closures, facility closures and city projects and initiatives.
