Residents sought for Council’s Boards, Commissions, Committees

Lethbridge residents wanting to make a difference in their community are encouraged to apply to be on one of City Council’s Boards, Commissions and Committees (BCCs).

Each public role provides an opportunity to participate in the present and future direction of the city. Whether they are advisory, decision-making, quasi-judicial or governing roles, all of City Council values the input of residents appointed to these groups.

A recruitment campaign is now underway and applications will be open until October 4 for a variety of positions. The Office of the City Clerk coordinates, on behalf of Council, board-member recruitment, appointments and training, as well as the establishment and classification of new committees and assists Council in developing guidelines for these bodies.

“Through this recruitment process, we are making every effort to let our residents know that serving on a Board, Commission or Committee is a worthwhile and productive experience,” says Ryan Westerson, Legislative Services Manager.

“Sitting on a Board, Commission or Committee is one of the best ways to provide your voice in the community to help with Council’s decisions,” says Belinda Crowson, City Councillor and chair of the Governance Standing Policy Committee.

Earlier this year, City Council directed a review of their Boards, Commissions and Committees. This review is still ongoing and is scheduled to be before the Governance SPC on October 24. For background, please refer to the July 25 Governance SPC meeting. If there are changes to Council’s Boards, Commissions and Committees, applicants will be contacted, and their application may be utilized for alternate vacancies.

Those interested are encouraged to refer to the BCC toolkit and list of Boards, Commissions and Committees for more information on eligibility, length of term, meetings times etc. For more information, please contact the Office of the City Clerk through 311 or email: committee@lethbridge.ca.

In 2023, City Council adopted a policy for honorariums for Boards, Committees and Commissions.
