Weekly updates on southern Alberta reservoir levels

The end of winter is mere weeks away and the mercury is climbing. With spring on the horizon, eyes are once again turning to southern Alberta reservoirs.

The City of Lethbridge has resumed weekly reporting of water levels in the Oldman, St. Mary and Waterton reservoirs. The weekly updates use provincial data and will be posted here every Friday. Today’s update shows water levels in two of the three reservoirs are significantly above 2024 but remain below historical averages.

More provincial information, including snowpack surveys and the water supply outlook, can be found here. February’s update showed five of six locations for the Oldman snow surveys were below the normal range. However, all six sites were 30 mm higher than last year at this time.

In April 2024, the province introduced voluntary water-sharing agreements (WSA). Major water license holders in southern Alberta, including the City of Lethbridge, committed to reducing water use during severe droughts. While it's promising to see higher reservoir levels and snow surveys compared to last year, it's not yet known whether these agreements will be necessary this year. Planning discussions with the province are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
