Winter heating safety reminders

Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires during winter months.

As the heating season kicks into high gear, Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services reminds residents to heat their homes safely to protect their families and our community from fire hazards and carbon monoxide poisoning.

To prevent fires, always give heating equipment plenty of space. Keep anything combustible at least one metre away from all heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves. If you have a fireplace or space heater, establish a one-metre “kid-free zone” to prevent burns and accidental fires.

When using heating appliances, always follow manufacturer instructions and never use an oven or stove to heat your home, as these appliances are not designed for the purpose and can pose serious risks.

Proper ventilation is critical when using fuel-burning equipment. Carbon monoxide, a colourless and odourless gas, can build up when heating devices are not vented correctly, leading to dizziness, unconsciousness and even death. Ensure that all vents and exhaust outlets are clear of snow, ice and debris to allow for proper airflow.

Take extra care when plugging in vehicles during cold weather. Inspect extension cords for frayed wire, cracks or damage before use, and avoid overloading electrical outlets. Faulty cords and improper use can pose fire hazards.

Test your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms every month to ensure they are working.

If you ever smell gas in your home, do not attempt to light a heating appliance. Leave the building immediately and call 9-1-1.

Home fires and carbon monoxide emergencies can happen quickly and without warning. Taking these simple precautions can help protect your family and keep your home safe throughout the winter.
