11 Street South watermain replacement nears completion

A months-long water infrastructure project is moving into its final weeks. Work to replace the aging watermain along 11 Street South, between 3 Avenue South and 6 Avenue South, began May 21.

Installation of the watermain is now complete to the north side of 6 Avenue. Paving between 4 Avenue South and 5 Avenue South is expected to be complete the week of August 12. In the meantime, north access to the old courthouse has been reopened to facilitate events at the Yates Memorial and Sterndale Bennett Theatres. Access will be closed again temporarily while paving crews are onsite.

The final stage of the project involves closing the intersection of 11 Street South and 6 Avenue South. The closure will begin on Monday, August 12 at 9 a.m. Detours will be in place for both east and westbound traffic.

Eastbound detour (marked in green below): north on Stafford Drive South, east on 3 Avenue South, south on 13 Street South to return to 6 Avenue South.

Westbound detour (marked in red below): north on 12 Street South, west on 4 Avenue South, south on Stafford Drive South to return to 6 Avenue South.

Two lanes of 6 Avenue South will temporarily reopen on Tuesday, August 20. This will help manage the expected heavy traffic for the Whoop Up Days parade and Mayor’s breakfast. The two lanes on the south side 6 Avenue South will accommodate east and westbound traffic. The roadway will close again that evening.

All efforts will be made to avoid unnecessary delays and have the intersection closed for a maximum of two weeks, pending weather delays.

Motorists are asked to drive with care in the construction area and obey all signs to keep our workers safe.
