Improving accessibility at Fritz Sick Pool

It will soon be easier for everyone to enjoy Fritz Sick Pool.

Upgrades will provide a safer and more comfortable visitor experience. Enhancements are planned throughout the building, including:

  • Barrier-free showers and toilet stalls
  • Two additional women’s showers (five total) plus a universal shower
  • Widened access points to the pool and locker rooms
  • New open and accessible entrance into a larger lobby with a barrier-free counter
  • Non-slip flooring throughout all locker, washroom and shower areas
  • Updated wheelchair ramps

Sunni Belle, General Manager of Canadian Recreation Excellence – Lethbridge, says the changes will create a more welcoming environment.

“These upgrades are all about inclusivity,” notes Belle. “We’re ensuring that everyone who visits Fritz Sick Pool can enjoy a convenient and relaxing experience.”

To accommodate construction, Fritz Sick Pool will close at the end of the day Friday, November 1. It’s expected to reopen to the public in late-February of 2025. During the closure, all Fritz Sick programs will move to Stan Siwik Pool and Nicholas Sheran Pool. For the most up to date schedules, visit www.recex.ca/lethbridge.

“We understand the short-term closure is an inconvenience,” says Travis Grindle, Recreation Services Manager. “We appreciate the community’s patience and support. We believe this is short-term pain for long-term gain, and we’re excited to see the updated, more accessible version of Fritz Sick Pool.”

The estimated budget for the upgrades is $900,000, with funding coming from the Facility Assessment and Accessibility Upgrades and City Lifecycle budgets.
